Why this ship matters

Some expanded historical records place Jean-Luc Picard in command of the USS Portia in 2360, during the gap between the loss of the Stargazer and his later command of the Enterprise-D.

Those accounts describe the Portia as a Miranda-class science variant without the standard roll-bar weapons pod, instead carrying outrigger sensor cannons.

The ship reportedly carried a quantum physics laboratory on deck seven, sector three, compartment two, making it a more science-focused posting than many of Picard's best-known commands.

In the disputed account, Picard led the Portia on a secret mission into a zone contested by the Sheliak Corporate and the Breen Confederacy while searching for a Manraloth stasis field. The crew found the artifact on a world they designated Adonis II.

The reported crew included Commander Quetzalxochitl Vejar as first officer, Doctor Bowman as chief medical officer, Lieutenant Data as chief science officer, Lieutenant Commander Ryallen Colla as chief engineer, Ensign Johanna Kolbe and Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien at conn, and Shawn Rider as transporter chief.

Because these records conflict with the cleaner primary service timeline, this archive treats the Portia as a historically disputed entry rather than folding it into Picard's Starfleet record without qualification.
